May 5, 2008

Well here we are from Dieppe. We left Brugge this morning and it was already beautiful and sunny. It got to 22C today and when we got to Dieppe at about 3:30 it was wonderful to get out and walk on the beach some.

I was trying to think what it would have been like all those years ago when Canadian Soldiers landed here and came ashore to fight for someone else's freedoms. It is very sobering when you think about it.

We came through De Panne Belgium and just had to stop and get some freshly made chocolates. It is very definitely very good chocolate. Now we were ready to go back into France again. We left Dunkerque, then Calais and the traffic was very busy because of the ports at both places so we continued on to some smaller places just inland from the ocean. One of the places was a neat little place called Nieuwport (sp) and our Blonde co-driver found us some really small tracks to follow.

Unfortunately the first two were closed for construction, and the third one ended up being a private residential road which had a questionable road sign on it that I was loathe to try. I didn't want to get a ticket. On one of the ones closed for construction, I had to back up a gravel path for about 200 feet before I could turn around LOL. There was a local guy sitting in front of his house right where I turned around and he laughed at our predicament. This all came about as Jan was tired of flying down the freeway at 100+ and wanted to try some quieter, more picturesque scenery, so I programmed the GPS not to use Highways on our trip for a while.

We travelled through some really nice country, saw lots of beautiful landscapes, small villages, well looked after farms, and hardly any traffic. We're spending the night in Dieppe, and hope to see the Canadian memorial here, before we leave, if we can find it, then on to Ste Michel farther down the coast.
