April 11

We had a wonderful day today. We drove to Winchester to see the cathedral in bright sunshine. We got there just in time to go on a tour with a very knowledgeable man who told us all about the history of the cathedral, from it's very beginning to now. It was most interesting and enlightening.

As we finished the tour and started heading back to the car, I noticed the sky wasn't as clear as when we arrived. It was windy, and as we walked off the property and got into town. Soon the rain started, and by the time we walked across the road, and into a pub for lunch, it was literally raining cats and dogs. Then the hail started! The people in the pub were hilarious to watch. You'd think they never saw hail before. By the time we finished eating, it had more or less stopped. We walked a block, and it started again, so we took shelter in the entranceway to a jewelry store. Finally we moved on in a slight drizzle, and soon the sun came out again and we were back to a beautiful sunny day. Only in England, I guess.

Our next stop after about an hour's drive, was Stonehenge! When we arrived in the area, about 5 miles away, we ran into a two lane line-up which took us about another 1/2 hour to work through. we walked onto the field with the stones and were forced to fight against a 25-30 mile per hour wind. It lasted the whole time we were there,

Now it was on to Chippenham where we're to stay for two nights. We drove through some really nice country, and even passed some "Tank Crossing" signs on the road, but Jan wasn't quick enough to turn on the camera and snap a picture before the traffic behind us drove over our little car. LOL

Tomorrow, we're off to Bath and the South-west corner of England before we start up north.
